Document Guide for Standard License or Permit

Standard License and Permit Document Guide

Welcome

Welcome to the New York DMV Standard License and Permit Document Guide

Use this guide to determine what proof documents you need to bring to the DMV for a "Standard" New York State driver license or permit (see information about Standard non-driver IDs) after December 16th, 2019.

Standard licenses and permits are not federally compliant and will be marked "NOT FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES." Unlike an Enhanced or REAL ID, starting in May 2023, you will not be able to use your Standard license or permit to board a domestic flight (within the United States).

Your documents must:
  • Be original or certified by the issuing agency.
  • Be unexpired, unless specifically noted.
  • Be in English, or accompanied by a certified English language translation.
  • Not be mutilated or damaged (we will confiscate any that appear fraudulent).
